PAT-Net Search for new Editorship

PAT-Net is excited and pleased to announce the search for a new editorship of its journal, Administrative Theory & Praxis. 

ATP is a core part of the intellectual efforts of the Network. The journal began in 1978 as a circular titled Dialogue. Since then, it has grown in circulation and is now published by Taylor & Francis on a quarterly basis.

The new Editorship will have the opportunity to shape the future of the journal as well as to be a part of the growing community of scholars and practitioners who work to bring a critical, humanist, and theoretical voice to the discourse of government, governance, and administration.

The Public Administration Theory Network (PAT-Net) invites proposals for the next editorship of Administrative Theory & Praxis (ATP). We seek energetic leadership from the global field of public administration to build on the long-standing strengths of the journal while expanding its geographical and substantive profile to reflect the field’s contemporary challenges and dynamics.

The search committee is: Thomas Catlaw (Arizona State University, USA; Chair), Tia Sherèe Gaynor (Marist College, USA), Mary Guy (University of Colorado-Denver, USA), Roy Heidelberg (Louisiana State University, USA), and Hendrik Wagenaar (University of Sheffield, UK).

Now published by Taylor & Francis, ATP has been a distinguished academic outlet for nearly four decades dedicated to philosophical, humanistic, and theoretical analysis of public administration and governance. ATP has committed to scholarship that offers critical and normative perspectives on transforming public administration praxis. It has offered an outlet for novel theoretical approaches and marginalized voices. ATP’s commitment to critical thought and inclusivity has never been more important.

21st Century Mission

The realities of public administration scholarship in the 21st century require an expansion of the journal’s geographical and substantive profile. The journal requires greater visibility and fuller engagement with critical scholars around the world. Furthermore, the journal should be a welcoming venue for richly conceptualized empirical work, especially from the critical and interpretivist traditions. ATP welcomes the perspectives of diverse scholars to build on ATP’s existing strengths while expanding its mission.

Editorial Team Qualifications
The desired qualifications of the next editor/s and editorial team include:

  • A commitment to developing the critical, cutting-edge scholarship on which ATP has built its reputation
  • A demonstrated capacity to advance and build upon the mission outlined above
  • A demonstrated record of scholarly excellence germane to the scholarship of ATP
  • International visibility in the field of public administration
  • Professional experience relevant to the production of an academic journal
  • A collaborative management style
  • A commitment to mentoring emerging voices and perspectives

Proposal Guidelines

Applicants are urged to think creatively about the structure of the editorship and of the journal itself as they develop their proposals. Applicants also are encouraged to assemble teams that leverage the diversity of the global public administration community.

Competitive proposals should establish candidates’ qualifications for the editorship and provide: (1) a strategy for advancing and building upon the existing strengths of the journal and contributing to the further development of the journal’s mission; (2) a strategy for developing ATP’s position viz. standards of journal quality and indexing services; (3) a strategy for broadening the geographical scope of the journal; (4) an approach to developing, engaging, and working with the editorial board and managing the external review process; (5) a strategy for developing the pipeline of quality submissions and the visibility of published scholarship; and (6) ideas for enhancing the journal’s social media presence and partnership with Taylor & Francis.

Proposals should include letters from the relevant university administrators that indicate institutional and financial support for the editorship and the CVs of all members of the editorial team, as supplementary material. Examples of specific areas of support include course releases, editorial assistants, and funds for national and international conference attendance.

Applications from outside the United States and diverse candidates are encouraged. Diversity may include, but is not limited to, gender, ethnicity, race, gender identity, culture, national origin, ideology, or other personal or professional characteristics that are either unrepresented or underrepresented.

Exclusive of letters of support and supplementary materials, proposals should be no more than 6 single-spaced pages.

Proposals for the editorship should be sent to Thomas Catlaw ( not later than June 1, 2017. Those interested should feel free to contact Dr. Catlaw. Finalists for the position will be interviewed by the search committee and be asked to share their general vision and strategies for developing the journal with Network membership. The new editor will begin transition work soon after selection and formally assume responsibilities on January 1, 2018. The initial term is three (3) years with the possibility of a three-year reappointment.
